Fantastic news – M&S Ashbourne has once again chosen Careline as its local charity! A huge thank you to them – we’re absolutely thrilled that their staff have recognised what a difference our telephone befriending service makes to the local community and have chosen to support us!
We’ll keep you up to date with our fundraising plans and please do keep an eye out for our collection buckets which will be in store for the next 6 months. Every penny counts and goes directly towards keeping our valuable service going.

Careline Supporter Dominic Delf and a group of intrepid friends have taken on the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge in aid of Careline. The team, made up of Dominic, Ciara Delf, Tom Delf, Gavin Delf, Peter Douglas and Michael Pettingale, took the challenge on 15 August which involved climbing the peaks of Pen-y-Ghent (691m) , Whernside (728m) and Ingleborough (723m), all in under 12 hours! These peaks form part of the Pennine range, and encircle the head of the valley of the River Ribble, in the Yorkshire Dales National Park.
We’re enormously grateful to Dominic and his team for taking this on for Careline. Please support them by making a donation on our Virgin Money Giving Page: http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/charity-web/charity/displayEventDetails.action?eventId=22688&charityId=1005884&invocation=evt0050
We had a lovely time at our Strawberry Tea recently. The sun shone, giving us beautiful views over Dovedale, with everyone enjoying the opportunity to catch up with old friends or to meet new ones over afternoon tea.
The birthday girl and boy, Theresa and John
Talented young local trumpeter Josh Short delighted us with some vintage tunes, as well as playing an impromptu “Happy Birthday” to Theresa and John, whose birthdays it was that day. We were also joined by some special guests including Derbyshire County Councillor and long time Careline supporter Steve Bull; as well as 3 representatives from M&S Ashbourne, who have helped us to raise a significant amount of money this year. Pat Arnold, Site Manager at St Oswald’s Hospital was able to join us for a cup of tea too.
Everyone agreed what a super afternoon it had been!

We are extremely grateful to the Uttoxeter Lions for their very generous donation of £200 to Careline last week. It means a great deal to us to be supported by local organisations and we wish David Eadie every success as Lion President in the coming year.
Thank you to everyone who supported last week’s Auction for Action either by donating lots, buying raffle tickets or coming along to the event. It turned out to be a really exciting action-packed evening, with Careline making around £1000!! In addition to some fantastic fundraising, we also managed to recruit our first charity mascot!
On Wednesday 10th June, Careline will be taking part in a fundraising charity auction – Auction for Action, along with several other small local charities including Derbyshire Children’s Hospital, Royal School for the Deaf Derby and Derbyshire Advocacy Services. Charles Hanson of the BBC’s Bargain Hunt and Antiques Road Trip, will be auctioning items to raise some much needed funds for each of the charities involved, in what promises to be an entertaining evening.
Everyone is welcome to come along to this free event at Hansons Auctioneers, Heage Lane, Etwall Derbyshire DE65 6LS. You are invited to view the auction lots and visit the charities’ stalls from 4.30pm, whilst enjoying a glass of wine and canapes. You will also be able to buy raffle tickets, with some great prizes on offer including a cheque for £300, a day at Chatsworth House for 2 with afternoon tea courtesy of the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire and a bat signed by Derbyshire County Cricket Club’s 1st team squad. The auction will begin at 7pm, with all proceeds being donated to the charities taking part. The auction catalogue is now available on-line at http://www.hansonsauctioneers.co.uk/, so if you are interested in any of the items but unable to attend, you could make an on-line or telephone bid (but you will need to register with Hansons before the event). Raffle tickets can be purchased from the Careline Office, St Oswald’s Hospital, Ashbourne at £1 each or £5 per book.
Come along a join in the fun!

We were recently very lucky to have renowned wildlife photographer and author Dr Michael Leach deliver two talks at Abbotsholme School, in support of Careline.
The audience were thoroughly entertained – so much so that some people who had heard Michael speak in the afternoon decided to return to hear him again in the evening! Both talks were informative and very funny, with everyone learning something new about the highlights and perils of the work of a wildlife photographer. Michael very generously spent time answering questions and signing books afterwards, leaving one particular young fan thrilled and full of enthusiasm having received some professional tips on taking wildlife shots! A really engaging speaker, Careline would highly recommend anyone to go along and hear Michael the next time he appears locally.
Thank you to everyone to came along to support us, helping to raise over £800 for our charity! Thank you also to Lucy Barnwell and her team at Abbotsholme School for allowing us to use their beautiful facilities and for all of their help in the planning and on the day itself.
Thank you to everyone who came along and supported our annual sponsored walk on Sunday. Although the weather wasn’t quite as balmy as last year, the rain did hold off – so for the second year in a row, waterproofs weren’t required! Plus we were all pleased to have yet another opportunity to walk in the beautiful grounds of the Wootton Estate. Thanks also to the Rotary Club of Uttoxeter for inviting Careline to be part of such a well organised event.
We’ll let you know how much we’ve raised, as the money continues to come in over the next few weeks.
